The Winchester is situated between the 1930s-built former water board offices, now home to social services, and the Castle Hotel. Only three years old, the Winchester is the brewery tap for the local Rhymney Brewery, based on the Pant Industrial Estate, Dowlais. The new Rhymney Brewery was established in 2005, using the name of a brewery that was once famous throughout South Wales before being closed by Whitbread in 1978.

In 1936, the East Sheen Lawn Tennis Club complained to the London brewery, Watneys, that its beer was not keeping until the weekend, when most of its customers came in. Watneys, which had been working on a prototype beer called Red Barrel intended for troops in India, swiftly redirected it to the less exotic surroundings of leafy Surrey. Red Barrel was a new type of beer: keg.

Elizabethton/Carter County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Candy Craig on Thursday told members of the organization's board of directors that the Octoberfest debut last month was a success. "We made $900 off Octoberfest, which was delightful, because we did not have any major sponsors," Craig said. "Tourism sponsored us $500 this year for a new festival, to help us get that going...We had a good turnout. We filled the streets."

Last week , Pyramid's Haywire Hefeweizen proved a tad, shall we say, underwhelming. This week seemed a perfect opportunity to try a couple of macro-brewed attempts at craft-brew styles, just to put things in perspective. After all, if a relatively small outfit like Pyramid can't get the wheat-beer style right, surely a lowest-common-denominator, masses-pleasing corporate behemoth like Anheuser-Busch couldn't do a better job, could it?

When Gary Shellman shows off a beer brewing system in his garage, he'll refer to it as a "brewing sculpture." "Because it's literally brewing art," he says. But Shellman won't show our cameras the finished product because he knows brewing beer at home is actually against the law in Oklahoma.
